Markets, domains and languages: what to set up before using Selecty

What to set up in Shopify Markets for Selecty

In this article:

Selecty switches your store between the countries, currencies and languages that already exist in your Shopify Markets. It does not create them, and it does not translate text or convert prices on the fly.

That means everything Selecty uses — whether it is shown to visitors in a selector or banner, or used automatically for geo-based redirects — comes from your Shopify store configuration. If something is missing from a selector, banner, or redirect behavior, it is almost always missing or not configured correctly in Shopify Markets. This article covers what to set up in Shopify first and what to check when a resource does not appear or work as expected.

How Selecty works with Shopify Markets

The work is split between two sides:

  • Shopify Markets holds the data — which countries you sell to, which currency each market uses, which languages are published, and which domain each market uses.
  • Selecty gives the visitor a way to switch — a selector, a recommendation banner, or an automatic redirect.

When a visitor switches, Selecty tells Shopify which version of the page to serve. The prices and the translated text that appear come from your own Shopify store — the market pricing you configured and the translations you added to it. Selecty does not produce either of them.

So the rule is simple: anything missing in Markets is missing in Selecty. Add it in Shopify and it appears in the app automatically.

What to set up in Shopify first

Four things must be in place before Selecty has anything to switch between:

  1. An active market containing the countries you sell to.
  2. A currency assigned to that market — which requires Shopify Payments.
  3. Your languages added and published, and your content translated.
  4. Separate domains per market — only if you want a selector that switches between markets by their domain rather than by country.

Each one is covered below.

Markets and countries

From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Markets.

Check that the market containing your target countries exists and is active. A market left inactive or in draft is not live on your storefront, so its countries will not appear as options in Selecty.

Currencies

Currency is set per market, not per store. Open a market and check its Currency settings. There are two ways to configure it:

  • One fixed currency for the market — every customer in that market sees the same currency. Suitable when the market covers a single country, or countries you want to price uniformly.
  • Local currencies — each country in the market shows its own currency, converted automatically. Useful when one market contains countries with different currencies, so a single currency cannot be set for it.

Important: to sell in more than one currency, your store must have Shopify Payments enabled. Without it, your store sells in one currency only — the currency of the country where the store was created — and there are no additional currencies for Selecty to offer. Currency management becomes available in Markets once Shopify Payments is enabled.

Exchange rates are also Shopify's — set to Dynamic (automatic market rates) or Manual (a fixed rate you enter). Selecty never sets a rate and never converts a price.

Languages

From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Languages. Adding a language is three separate steps, and skipping any of them is the most common reason a language does not appear or appears untranslated.

1. Add the language. Click Add language, select it from the list, then choose the domains it should be available on.

2. Publish it. Click the menu icon next to the language and select Publish. A language that has been added but not published is not live on your storefront, so Selecty cannot switch to it.

3. Translate your content. Adding a language only brings Shopify's own supported theme and checkout strings. Your products, collections, pages and custom theme content stay in the original language until you translate them — with Shopify's free Translate & Adapt app, or another translation app from the Shopify App Store.

Selecty switches to an already-prepared version of your website. It does not perform live translation. If a page has never been translated into French, switching to French shows that page in its original language.

Domains and languages per market

Each market can use its own domain, subdomain or subfolder, and each domain carries its own set of languages. A language can be published on your store yet still be unavailable in a particular market, if that market's domain does not include it.

Automatic redirects do not require separate domains. On a single domain, Shopify swaps the currency and language of the page instead of sending the visitor to a different URL.

Separate domains matter for one specific case: a selector that switches between markets by their domain, rather than by country. Selecty's Market domains resource reads those domains, so for that selector type each market needs its own domain or subdomain. Add the domains in Shopify first, then assign one to each market.

What Selecty does not do

  • No live translation. The app switches between versions of your store that you have already prepared. Untranslated content stays untranslated after switching.
  • No live currency conversion. Prices and exchange rates come from your Shopify market pricing.
  • It does not create currencies or languages. Adding a resource inside Selecty makes it selectable; it does not add it to your store. Currencies are created in Markets once Shopify Payments is enabled, and languages in Settings > Languages.
  • It does not change product availability. If a product is not included in a market's catalog, switching to that market will not make it visible.

Why an option is missing, and how to fix it

What you see

Why

What to do

A currency is missing from the selector

Shopify Payments is not enabled, or the market is set to one fixed currency

Enable Shopify Payments, then set the market's currency or turn on Local currencies

A language is missing from the selector

The language was added but never published, or it is not enabled for that market's domain

Publish it in Settings > Languages, and check the market's domains and languages

Text is still in the original language after switching

The content was never translated

Install Translate & Adapt or another translation app and add the missing translations

Prices did not change after switching country

The market uses your store's base currency, or the visitor's country is not in an active market

Check the market's currency settings and that the market is active

A market domain selector shows the wrong options

Several markets share one domain

Give each market its own domain or subdomain

Why use Selecty if Shopify already has selectors and redirects

Shopify gives you the mechanism: a Country/region and a Language toggle under Online Store > Preferences, plus whatever selector your theme happens to include. Selecty gives you control over how that mechanism behaves and how it looks.

  • Design and placement. Selector styles, templates, colors and icons that match your theme, in positions a built-in theme selector does not offer — and as many selectors and combinations as you need.
  • A recommendation banner instead of a forced redirect. Shopify's automatic redirection does not apply to customers inside the EU, because of local legislation; Shopify's own documentation points merchants to third-party apps for country and region recommendations there. A banner also suits visitors on a VPN or travelling, who would otherwise be redirected to the wrong market.
  • Visibility rules. Decide which visitors see a selector or a banner, and where.
  • Redirect filtering. Apply redirect rules to specific visitors rather than switching one store-wide setting on or off.
