What Lably can't do, and workarounds

In this article:

Lably covers most label and badge setups, but some things work differently from what you might expect, and a few are not possible at all. This article lists those cases, explains why, and shows how to get the result another way. If your case isn't here, contact us at support@devit.software and we'll suggest a setup.

Plans and limits

Each plan has a limit of active labels and badges.
The Free plan includes 1 active label rule and 1 active badge rule, Basic 5 and 3, Grow 15 and 7, and Plus has no limit. Only published rules count.
Workaround: unpublish rules you don't use right now. Use display conditions to cover many products with one rule, for example one "SALE" label for every product with a compare-at price. If you need more, upgrade on the Plans page.

Some features need a paid plan.
Animations, the week schedule, the display period and translations are marked Pro in the editor and need the Basic plan or higher.
Workaround: on the Free plan, use static text such as "20% OFF" and publish or unpublish the label by hand.

Showing several labels on one product needs some planning.
Every label whose conditions match a product is shown. Labels in the same position can cover each other.
Workaround: give each label its own position (for example, top left and top right), or use conditions that don't match the same products.

Where labels appear

Labels need the app embed.
Lably shows labels through a Shopify app embed. If it's off, no labels or badges appear.
Workaround: open Lably and check the Theme extension card. If it isn't Active, click Activate and save in the theme editor.

Labels appear only in your online store theme.
Lably doesn't add labels to the checkout, order status page, emails or headless (Hydrogen) storefronts.

Some themes and page builders need a custom CSS selector.
Lably finds product images and titles automatically in most themes. Heavily customized themes, quick view windows and some page builders use different markup, so labels may not appear there.
Workaround: set a custom CSS selector for the label. See Custom CSS selector. On the Plus plan, our team sets up custom themes for you.

A label appears only on the page types you select.
A label turned on for product pages doesn't appear on the home page or in collections.
Workaround: in Visibility on pages, select every page type where the label should appear.

Display conditions

Conditions are based on products, not customers.
Lably can't show a label only to logged-in customers, to customers with a certain tag or to B2B buyers.
Workaround: show the label to everyone and adjust the text so it works for all visitors. To show a label only in some countries, use the Visitor country condition.

There is no market or language condition.
The only location condition is Visitor country.
Workaround: add all countries of the market to Visitor country. To show the label in the visitor's language, add translations for it in Translations.

There is no separate "exclude products" list.
Instead, you exclude products with conditions.
Workaround: tag the products to skip (you can bulk edit tags in Shopify) and add the condition Product tag > Does not include. Set Products must match to All when you combine it with other conditions. See Display conditions.

Metafield conditions can only check simple values.
A Product metafield condition checks whether a value exists or is equal to a value.
Workaround: store a ready-made value in the metafield, such as yes for limited-edition products, and check for that value. See Product metafield.

Label content

The discount value comes only from the compare-at price.
{{product.save_percent}} and {{product.save_amount_without_currency}} compare the price with the compare-at price. Automatic discounts, discount codes and B2B price lists don't change them.
Workaround: set compare-at prices for products on sale. For code promotions, use a label with static text such as "Use code SALE20". See Show the discount or stock left on a label with dynamic values.

Translations are entered by hand.
Lably doesn't translate label text automatically and doesn't take translations from your translation app.
Workaround: add the text for each language in Translations, and add an image for each language if your label is an image. See Translate label text and images into other languages.

Custom fonts must come from your theme.
Lably doesn't host font files.
Workaround: add the font to your theme first, then use its name in the label. See How to use a custom font in a label.
