Why accelerated checkout might hide your upsell offer
Why an upsell offer can disappear in accelerated checkout
To speed things up, Shopify sometimes shows checkout sections in a collapsed, summarized state. This happens in two common cases:
- The customer is checking out with Shop Pay.
- A returning customer is already signed in and has a saved address or payment method (Shopify calls this a vaulted state).
In both cases, sections like Delivery or Payment can appear collapsed, showing just a short summary instead of the full form — so the customer doesn't have to re-enter information they've already given.
That's great for speed, but it creates a problem if the app block showing your upsell offer is placed inside one of those sections. When the section is collapsed, everything inside it — including that block — is hidden. The offer is still there and still configured correctly; the customer simply never sees it.
Where you place the block matters
Shopify's checkout editor splits the layout into two top-level areas that are displayed side by side: Main (Contact, Delivery, Payment, and so on) and Order summary (Cart, Discounts, and so on). Every app block has a Checkout behavior panel, with settings that control how it behaves in accelerated checkout — but which settings you see, and whether you need them at all, depends on exactly where under those two areas the block sits.
Block placed directly under "Main"
If the block is placed directly under Main — not nested inside Contact, Delivery, or Payment — there's no section to collapse around it. You'll only see one setting:
- Include block in Shop Pay — turns the offer on for accelerated checkout at all. If this is off, the offer won't show up in Shop Pay or express checkout, regardless of where the block is placed.
Turn this on, save, and the offer will show up correctly in Shop Pay.
Block nested inside a section under "Main"
If the block is nested inside a section — for example, added inside Delivery — you'll see a second setting appear right below the first one:
- Automatically expand sections to show app — forces that section to stay open in accelerated or vaulted checkouts, so the block nested inside it stays visible.
This one matters because turning on Include block in Shop Pay by itself isn't enough here: the block can still be hidden if the section around it collapses. When a block is placed inside a section, both settings appear together in the Checkout behavior panel, as shown below — turn on Automatically expand sections to show app too, so the section stays open and the offer displays consistently.

Block placed anywhere under "Order summary"
Order summary has its own nested structure too — for example, line items inside the cart — but it behaves differently from Main. Its content always describes what the customer is actually buying, so Shopify never collapses it, in Shop Pay or in any vaulted state.
Practically, this means a block placed anywhere under Order summary — nested or not — will display just as consistently as a block placed directly under Main. You still need Include block in Shop Pay turned on, but you don't need to worry about Automatically expand sections to show app, since there's nothing there that collapses in the first place.
Step-by-step
- From your Shopify admin, go to Settings → Checkout.
- In the Configurations section, click Edit next to the checkout configuration you want to change.
- Click the upsell offer you want to fix (for example, Upsell Offer 1).
- In the Checkout behavior section, turn on Include block in Shop Pay.
- If the block is nested inside a section, also turn on Automatically expand sections to show app.
- Click Save.
- Click Preview Shop Pay to check that the offer now shows up correctly in the accelerated checkout.
