Post-purchase offers are the only part of ReSell that depends on how the customer paid. Checkout (Shopify Plus only), Thank you page and Order status page offers work with every payment method.
This article explains which payments allow a post-purchase offer, and how to check your own payment provider.
The simple rule
When a customer accepts a post-purchase offer, the product is added to the order they just placed and charged to the same card. They don't pay again and don't re-enter their card details.
For that to work, Shopify must be able to save the customer's card during checkout and charge it a second time. This is called a vaulted payment: Shopify stores the card securely for the follow-up charge.
So a payment works with post-purchase offers when both of these are true:
- The customer pays by card on the Shopify checkout page. They are not sent to another website to complete the payment.
- The card can be charged again without the CVV. The provider doesn't ask for the 3-digit security code on every charge.
Payments that don't meet both conditions, such as buy now, pay later services, digital wallets or gift cards, can't show a post-purchase offer. See the full list in Why is my post-purchase upsell offer not displayed?
Payments that work with post-purchase offers
- Shopify Payments: the standard and most reliable option.
- Shop Pay: when the customer pays in full with a card saved in their Shop account. Shop Pay Installments isn't supported.
- PayPal Express: only if your PayPal Business account is approved for Automatic payments (PayPal calls them "Reference Transactions"). Without it, PayPal still appears at checkout and the order goes through, but the offer isn't shown. See How to connect PayPal to Shopify?
- Braintree, PayPal Payments Pro, PayPal Payflow Pro: only when the customer pays by card and the gateway doesn't require the CVV on every charge.
- Third-party card providers that let Shopify save the card, where the customer enters card details on the Shopify checkout and isn't redirected. For example, Authorize.net or Adyen.
How to check your own payment provider
If your provider isn't listed above, you can check it in a minute:
- Go to Settings → Payments in your Shopify admin and find your provider.
- Place a small test order and watch the checkout. If the customer is sent to another website to pay, post-purchase offers won't work.
- Check whether your provider requires the CVV for every transaction. If it does, post-purchase offers won't work. Some providers let you turn this off in their dashboard.
- If both checks pass, place one real test order and confirm the post-purchase page appears.
Other places you can show offers
Only post-purchase offers depend on the payment method. Checkout (Shopify Plus only), Thank you page and Order status page offers work with every payment method and are shown to every customer. If your store often gets orders through unsupported payment methods, use any of these three instead.
They look similar to the customer. The difference is when the accepted product is added to the order, and how it is paid for.
Checkout offers (Shopify Plus only): the accepted product is added to the order before it is created, so the customer pays for everything at once. Only Shopify Plus stores can show app offers on the checkout page.
Post-purchase offers: the accepted product is also added to the original order, but after the order is created. While the post-purchase page is shown, Shopify gives the customer up to one hour to accept or decline the offer. During that time the order's fulfillment status changes from Unfulfilled to On hold, so the order isn't fulfilled before the customer decides. As soon as the customer accepts or declines, the status goes back to Unfulfilled. If they close the page, the hold is released automatically after the hour. Read more in Shopify's article on system fulfillment holds.

Thank you page and Order status page offers: you choose how these are processed in ReSell → Settings → TYP & OSP upsell offer:
- Process accepted products as new order: the customer is taken to the payment page, skipping the cart, customer information and shipping method pages.
- Add accepted products to an original order: the original order is edited and its total is updated. If the total changes, you need to charge the customer the difference, and the order stays Partially paid until they pay it. See What are partially paid orders?
